Ccsope 6MX Tones/advanced tones discussion
Hi all!
After using the 6MX over the past few years, I'm pretty confident I know what all the tones are now, and I thought I'd write my thoughts down here for you all, just incase it helps anyone. Of course, all this is just through my experience, and I'd like to invite anyone to try these, and tell me any instances where they've had a different experience.
So, with that said:
The High "Ping" This is the tone that we're told to look for, but in my experience its not always good. A really high ping tends to be big iron, or a 'good' target very near the surface. Bad metals such as shrapnel also tend to give this tone. I always dig this, as It could be something near the surface as mentioned.
The slightly withdrawn high ping My favourite tone of them all. Nearly always something very good. Most coins come up in this tone. A note here is that this tone is the same as the high ping, but slightly more distant. Those that have been using the 6MX for a good while know what I mean here. All my hammereds have come up in this tone, as well as all love tokens etc. Infact, nearly all coins come up under this, unless they are near the surface (then they become the High ping tone)
Strangely, the 'good' lead items come in under this tone as well. Bag seals, lead tokens, whorls etc. Strangely (or genius on Cscopes part) all the bad lead comes under the below tone. Is this because they're not circular?
The high tone with a slight grunt in the background. Sometimes you'll get a good tone, but will have a slight grunt in the background when you test it again. This is nearly always shrapnel, bad lead, shotgun tops, spent rounds such as .303's, tin foil. Not good.
The mid tone The mid tone is quite rare isn't it? Small buttons can come in the 'high ping' and 'slightly high ping' alongside the mid tone. Apart from that, I don't recall good objects coming up under this tone. Its best to dig these though, as some small coins can come under this apparently.
The Iron grunt Always avoid. Yuck.
Anyhow, it'd be good to hear your thoughts on this, fellow Scopers!

Hiya, Weeder.
Ok, it's a personal preference. I don't know where in the world you are, but I find that down here in South East Kent, ground balancing makes things way too sensitive. I've tried it on a few fields now, and it always goes a bit mad.
But, saying that, I haven't investigated it in any real depth yet, so I'm not really in a place to give advice. My only suggestion would be to try it, and see how it works for you!

Does the 'The slightly withdrawn high ping' include the nice, faint, almost distant high whistle? When I hear that I kick my spade deep in the ground, in anticipation of something deep and nice :-). I have been disappointed with the results, but most deep goodies give something like this.
As an aside - real deep targets start to grunt, but after a visit to a a testrange I dig everything that contains even a hint of high ping.

Yes, I think that's the same noise we are describing. It can also be lead as well, though!

Just thinking would it possible to record the sounds and post them up ????

Re: Ccsope 6MX Tones/advanced tones discussion
Hi there,
Decided to air test the discrimination options verses the discrimination volume levels on the Cscope 6mx. I used a silver groat, half cut, quarter cut and a bit of tin foil about the size of a modern two pence and folded 3 times. Unfortunately I didn't have any coke so i could not do that part of the test.
As you can see from the table, large silver will always be a high to regardless of the discrimination level.
I used to run my 6mx open, discrimination 1 and discrimination volume 1. But now looking at the results on the table I might try this next time I can get out with it and set it to:
Discrimination 4-5
Discrimination Volume 1
This will remove the foil and coke and give high tones for everything else.
Thanks
Greg

Very nice, thank you. I didn't find gold yet, but from what I heard small gold is easily discriminated out if you're not careful. Does anybody here have some small gold to test out? My wedding ring is easily detected on disc 4 (my default setting until recent) but I'm not so sure about those pretty small Roman gold coins, and thin rings.

My bad, not roman but Merovingian en celtic, like this - http://data.vondsten.nl/7/7/89177FU.jpg. Furthermore, between say 1000 and 1400 very small (about 10mm), very thin silver coins were minted over here, and most of the time not pure silver either, like this - http://www.dwangburchten.nl/medembl/avendorpmunt.jpg
These could very well give a signal like or close to foil. And look at it.. you don't want to miss a beauty like that.

Have just had a frustrating time in a mates' garden. My second proper attempt to learn the 6xmi. Found that I could not discriminate-out the foil. Driving me mad. Realise that you don't omit the noise-you learn it specifically and ignore it..
Op was v useful; yours made me laugh out loud. Thanks
