i just bought a NOKTA RS

have a look at them before you rush out and buy a garrette
they are a brilliant bit of kit

I may have to check them out, Weeder as I need a new one.

Garret was a bit iffy, and was eventually taken by the sea after I left it on the beach.

Also had a mine lab pro find. This thing could take anything. Lost it in a pile of earth in Latvia. Worked fine. Got run over by a JCB. Worked fine.

Its not working fine anymore though! I think I finally killed it.

i got a g pin pointer from a supplier with a name starting with (R )
they told me if was free delivery , then told me the next day told me it was £15 delivery
got stung ........... never will i get anything from them again .
now i read all the faults with them ,

Was wondering about the PI Xpointer from Detecnicks

I have never used one, but these look good. There's a youtube film of a guy bumping the end to show lack of falsing... apparently that was a flaw in the garret?

Does anyone rate pinpointers much? The 'divide' process obviously works fine, but if you've dug a hold too small to get the head down, isn't that when pinpointer comes in very handy?

Was told by a chap on the phone (MD shop) that they are not really that useful?

They are very, very useful! Cut your finds time dramatically.

I remember someone saying to me that you don't really get an idea of how good they are until you actually use one. That's very true. My minelab one has finally died, and it's now very very frustrating not having one. Feels really time consuming and tedious hunting for the find, when everyone else is doing it in half the time, and are then off onto their next target...

I love the garrett pro-pointer, look after it will last. Bought the PI Xpointer as I thought looks good in camo and good price. Sold straight away. Reasons:
1. Interfered with some of my detectors.(cscope was ok)
2. No final death tone. as you get closer on other probes you get a beeping sound which gets gradually faster until you get that final high pitched tone to inform you you have found it. On the Xpointer you don't get that final high tone on med/small items.
For me I found this very annoying as I could not tell if I was on it or had another inch to go.

I have only seen films of each in use. Wondering if the difficulty you has was using the xpointer as if it was the Garret? Hard to adapt to something new straight away? Maybe if I only use the xpointer, I'll not have a problem lack of 'final death tone'; there must be a (maximal) signal pattern which for me, would *become* the FDT, when using the xpointer?

Hoping some other users of both might offer a view.

Wanting to buy one or the other....soon... Very Happy

I wonder why you'd want a camo finish on a pinpointer.. I'd prefer neon orange, makes it a lot easier to find when you've put it somewhere on a field.

This is a good point. As Whatunearth will tell you, I lose everything, all the time when I'm on the field. Except for finds...

I've lost my pro-pointers on many occasions. I eventually left my Garret on the beach, and the Minelab has been lost on numerous ocassions. Especially in Latvia (It got buried on a number of occasions)

Problem is the colour. Grey or black is not good for me. The brighter the better!

Ordered an orange xpointer. I prefer smart looking gadgets (Not coloured) but went with practical orange. My original post above reads badly-I meant that the learning with the former (garret with fdt) makes use of latter (xpointer) difficult which a novice won't struggle with- having not learned to keep moving the probe until fdt is heard.
Anyhoo, it's done now so might feed back on how it goes...

I bought a pi xpointer six months ago. Really don't know how I managed without it.
Great bit of kit. First pinpointer Ive owned so had nothing to compare it with.

Hi Baz, thanks for info on old machine. I got a pinpointer from 2nd shop Falmouth £1. Do the garret ones float? Will watch out for one on beach

Not to lose kit or typical forget it when moving on. So attached a stout lanyard of braided copper wire loop. Clips to karabiner on belt too. Find 'em using appropriate tool ??!
