My way if setting manual ground balance is:
Find a spot without signals, on auto ground balance
Set disc 0, iron vol 10, disc vol irrelevant.
Turn ground balance up while pumping the disc above the ground. You should hear an irony sound.
Keep turning up until the sound is gone. Set disc and iron vol to your liking.
I have the feeling the machine is a bit sharper, albeit a tad more nervous. I also have the feeling (only based on gut feeling, so it could as well be total codswallop) that since the machine is set on a fixed ground balance it doesn't need to autobalance as well as detect it is more efficient. Also, and with the same credibility :-), I believe that you're more accurate in fields with localised iron infested patches, since autobalance doesn't adjust to the higher iron content but sticks to the best setting for the soil it is in.

In auto, is the balance fixed or does it track the changing ground conditions and compensate? The manual isn't clear and having just got one of these as a back-up detector it'd be interesting to know ....

I don't think it tracks the changing ground conditions, but has a wide band of ground compensation under the Auto section. This I believe takes into consideration most bad ground condition issues and offers the quietest detecting option. I believe that ground balancing manually can be a little more noisy, depending of field conditions, but will offer a little more depth, if correctly done.

Thanks
