I'd brought a cheap chinese detector from Ebay just to 'try' detecting down on my local beach.

First find was a pound coin.

Hooked.

I wonder if would still be detecting if I'd found nothing that day?

First find today: got a call from person lost item on beach. Decided to use csmirage as has depth control useful for recent dropped item. Had person mark approx location with wood marker , before wading out into the murk armed with trowel and voltronic pinpointer. Recovery of item took 2sec. Pleased. Thanks yet again cscope.....

Way back in time, my first metal detecting find was with one of the old scopes with manual ground balance. The find was a large collection of rusty nuts and bolts surrounding the site of a pre first war German self-propelled plow that was being shifted to a museum of rural life. The plow is the only one of its type.

Although this wasn't quite my first find, it was my first interesting find. Back in the 1970s commercially made detectors were few and far between, but electronics magazines had started to publish designs. This Insurance Firemark was found with the first one I got to work. Fortunately it was a big target and not very deep. It certainly beat the Victorian pennies that I had been finding.

A little James the first penny was my first 'find of note'. Worn but a 'treasure' to me after a run of copper halfpennies off parks and footpaths.
